Garage conversion in Stockport

The story of how we turned an old garage with an inspection pit into a seamless extension of the family home.

The Challenge

The clients wanted more living space – not a utility room or an extra bedroom, but a true extension of the family’s lounge and day-to-day life.

On site, there was an old inspection pit we had to fill in. The job also involved taking off the garage roof, building new walls, fitting windows, and replacing the roof with a properly insulated one. This was relatively straightforward for us.

For the family, the bigger worry was disruption: the dust, the noise of knocking through, and whether the result would truly feel like part of the home.
For us, minimising upheaval, keeping everything on track, and delivering exactly what we promised became just as important as the build itself.

Our Approach

This was a collaborative project. It needed planning permission, architectural drawings, and oversight from the building inspector, as well as ongoing discussions with our clients to make sure we delivered what they really wanted.

On site, the teamwork was seamless. Strip-out and preparation gave way to the bricklayers, then joiners, electricians, plumbers, and finally the plasterers. Each trade brought their expertise, and together they created a space that flowed naturally from the house.

Knocking through was the key moment. A steel beam supported the new opening, and the clients requested a curved archway to connect the two spaces. Our joiners cut the frame precisely, and our plasterers finished it so smoothly that it looked like it had always been there.

At every stage, the details were refined with the clients: “What do you really want now that it’s taking shape?”

That flexibility made sure the finished room truly suited their family’s needs and preferences.

And just as importantly, we delivered the project exactly as promised: on time, on budget, and with no hidden extras.

The Transformation

What had once been a draughty garage with an inspection pit became a modern, fully insulated family room. With direct access from the house, the space flowed naturally and felt like it had always been part of the home.

The clients now had not just more square footage, but a warm, flexible living area where the family could spend time together in comfort.
